In recent years, many Western Christians have begun to discover the Eastern practice of using icons as an aid to reflection and prayer—and have consequently learned much about the theology behind them and the liturgies in which they are traditionally used.
Icon Painting Courses
We are no longer running icon courses, but individual icon painting tuition is available—and is proving to be very popular. Please contact Sr Esther for details.

Sr Esther is an experienced iconographer who leads a number of icon painting workshops and retreats every year, some here at Turvey Abbey.
The icon painting courses at Turvey Abbey are suitable for people at all levels of experience, from those who are just developing an interest in icons to those who are already iconographers.
Sr Esther also runs an ‘icon support group’ at Turvey Abbey, an opportunity for iconographers to be together and work on their individual icons. The groups are held in Brand House.
Commissioning an Icon
Sr Esther has painted icons for churches in England and abroad as well as for individuals and would be happy to discuss your needs if you would like to commission an icon. For examples of icons painted by Sr Esther please see further down this page.
The British Association of Iconographers
Sr Esther is a founder of the British Association of Iconographers (BAI). The aim of the BAI is:
‘To deepen the knowledge and inner understanding of icons and the spirituality associated with them, while establishing contact with all iconographers – learners, beginners and those with a great proficiency.’ (from the BAI website).
